fingers crossed

It's a crisp, sunny, Sunday morning here in New Jersey and it would seem that Hurricane Earl is nowhere in sight. It's also game day for Sky Blue FC - in Atlanta...aaaand, I am indeed in New Jersey, dog sitting. However, it is a day filled with implications of the play-off variety; very exciting! My fingers are crossed and as Jenny Bindon would say, "they're getting sore from being crossed so long."

As for the ol' collarbone, I am excited to say that next week will be the eighth week! Hopefully the doctor will have some great news for me come Friday afternoon. Rehab has been going very well and it feels great to finally get back to running! Hurrah!

Also, on the World Cup front England has drawn Switzerland in the next round of qualifications. The first leg will be played September 12, oh how I wish I could be there. For more information check out http://www.thefa.com/England/womens-seniors

That's all for now, hopefully I'll have more to whinge about later ;)

creature comforts?

I'm afraid I have become a bit of an insomniac since small, furry creatures moved into the attic crawl space directly above my bedroom. You'd think that my new housemates would be a bit more in tune with my sleeping patterns, the least they could do is attempt to be piquant renters but no, they just have to keep on chewing insulation and forcing me to write blogs at 5am. (those of you reading this should thank them for making me write this, where are your manners?)

Too short to be an entry and too long to be a tweet, well, I suppose I'll continue on about something. How about a little start up clothing company out of Pacific Palisades, CA called Dez Clothing? Ok, I met Fed Bianchi when playing with the W-League's Pali Blues in 2008 at the time he came to our training sessions to make them even more competitive and quality then they already were. Like many blasts from the pasts, I got an email out of the blue from Fed about his new apparel line and BAM...Dez Clothing! (great story, I know)

So check this out;
"Dez (“ten” in Portuguese) is a line of clothing inspired by and dedicated to those players who not only wear the number 10 but who embody its profound meaning. These players do not just play the game but compose their movements and the movements of others into a manifest form of art – a poetic, momentous dance of skill and ingenuity – every time they set foot on the field." Even though I am a goalkeeper I can totally appreciate his concept, awesome. For more information go to www.dezclothing.com

I suppose I'll try and get some sleep. More later.

Supporters groups!

So I was thinking about things that could make people's experiences at our matches more enjoyable then they already are. I know that I love being apart of something special - something bigger then me and that is what I think makes teams so great. When I'm part of a team I know that I instantly have 20 brand new pals or even family members if you will. I even feel that the soccer community itself is that way. We all have one thing in common, we love soccer, football, futbol, whatever you want to call it an we should embrace it. The WPS, the W-Leauge, the WPSL, University programs, etc. would hugely benefit from each other if we saw these groups as teammates and not competitors. The point of these leagues and organizations from the grass roots levels and up is to develop talent and help players reach their goals; whatever they may be.

On that note I was thinking about clubs all over the world and their supporters groups. They have songs, common hangouts, and most of all their core groups stick together with their team through thick and thin - good and bad. To me, this is the sign of true support. Everyone can jump on a bandwagon, it happens all the time but to have a loyalty to a program is beyond any measure. I would love to get a seriously awesome team fan section going at Sky Blue FC matches with banners, scarves, and face paint! It would be incredible to see people tailgating or hanging out together, then walking into the ground /stadium at the same time singing songs and chants with their bells, whistles, banners, flags, drums and whatever else people can think of. I think we have a great opportunity here to make something really special happen - something that only happens in New Jersey, ONLY at Sky Bue FC games.

There are all sorts of nicknames we could use, here are a few I've come up with quickly: Sky Blue Crew? The Raritan end? Pride of Piscataway? Thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

I know this is only one little blog but I feel like this could be SO AWESOME if everyone bought in. Please feel free to question or comment. Create your own ideas, bring friends, go nuts!

Most sincerely yours,

What a week!

Oh boy, the last two weeks have been absolutely absurd. The week began after I returned home from England's World Cup Qualifier in Spain to meet up with Sky Blue FC for a week of preparation for match against FC Gold Pride. The jet lag was pretty easy to get over and I was straight back into training Tuesday morning, so - great to be back. I was also looking forward the WPS All-star game and meeting President Obama so I packed my bags for a week and headed out to San Francisco! I loved all 90 burning, feet melting minutes of Sunday's game in the Bay Area! That was by far our best performance of the season and we got a great result on the road to boot, I'm sure there will be plenty more just like it!

After the game we headed to the airport and jumped on a red eye back to Newark. The six of us that were invited to Atlanta plus baby Reece Rampone had a three hour layover in the B terminal, inevitably everyone except Tash (who was far too occupied with her iPad) fell asleep and twitched for a few hours in the middle of the adjacent gate. I can only imagine some of the weird looks we must have received but I really didn't care because I had an amazing dream about trained pigeons and picnics! We boarded our flight running on about three hours of sleep and upon arrival at our hotel in Atlanta, HAO and I decided to go for a jog and stretch and a quick dip in the pool, followed by a nap and the "pick 'em" event. The next day was the infamous "training day," well it was infamous in my book...I was having a blast. Erin McLeod and I were working with Jay Cooney and the rest of the team was playing possession with Albertine then we moved on to a small sided 7 v 7 game, followed by some finishing and then a crossing drill. Here's the scoop; a cross was driven across the six yard box, I dove to pick it off and as I made the save the player running on to finish the cross was in the same path as I was and we collided. My shoulder was driven straight into the torso and hip of the oncoming player and I heard and felt a pop and that's how I broke my collar bone. That's the long and short of it really - Boooo!
Subsequently, I spent most of the day with Rachel Ray...no, not the cook but one of the athletic trainers on the Beat staff. (Thanks Rachel, you took great care of me!!!) We spent quality time at the doctor's office, in Target (where I bought a cute heart pillow to stick under my sling) and in the pharmacy (where I got some fantastic medication that later proved to be less awesome because it made me puke...)

The following day was game day and it was so much fun! The game was terrific, the combination of players on each team was superb. My team "Marta XI" or otherwise known as "The United Nations" were a very technical side and we really took it to "Abby's XI " ;) I really enjoyed watching everyone have a great time on and off the pitch, the atmosphere was completely relaxed. I think my favorite part was getting to know everyone, there were so many great personalities! After the game there was a huge shindig at ATL's local sponsors but it was way to crowded for me so I went to eat with some buddies. Good times.

The next day we were off again, but this time our destination was Washington D.C. We jumped on another ridiculously early flight and stopped in a hotel just a few blocks away from the White House. We slept for a bit, changed and met up with the team and headed over to the President's house! The bus was boarded by a Secret Service agent who checked our ID's and walked us through security. We were given the official tour of the East Wing and we later had the luxury of meeting the President, I thought that's all that was going to happen but he held a press conference for us and gave a ten minute speech!!! It was an incredible experience!

Wow, so that was a ramble but I've have been trying to type this all day. It's not easy with one hand, especially when it's the left so throw me a bone. There's more to come tomorrow so keep checking back!

Weekend Update!

It's game day today! Yipee. As I am sure most of you are aware we (Sky Blue FC) take on Philadelphia Independence tonight at West Chester University at 6pm. For all of you New Jersey-ans? New Jersey-ites?...it's only a hop, skip and jump away so I hope to see you there!

Apologies for my plug up there but the folding of St. Louis Athletica has made me realize just how fortunate I am to be in New Jersey and playing professional soccer for a living. So a big THANK YOU to everyone who supports Sky Blue FC and the WPS!

Here are a few things that have happened since my previous post:
1. Sadly, St. Louis Athletica has folded. Many players have found new teams but Atlanta Beat has taken on a majority and added Eniola Aluko, Tina Ellertson, and Hope Solo from St. Louis to the roster. The "new look" Atlanta Beat have been dubbed "Atlantica."

2. Our head coach Pauliina assigned a "motivational music video" project. We were broken into groups and had two weeks to complete the video. Friday we had a viewing party but still have not made any decisions about a winner. Here's a little taste of my group's video.

3. I have finally signed up for my first guitar lesson! I'm tired of teaching myself and relying on you tube tutorials. (Not that they're not helpful, because they are!) I am so excited! Hopefully HAO will join me and we can get "The Total Packages" together.

4. Also, a shout out for Robbie Williams' "Soccer Aid" in partnership with UNICEF. Williams put together a great combination of celebrities and soccer stars to make up two teams; England and the Rest of the World. The event kicks off today at Old Trafford and the money raised will be donated to Children's Organizations around the world. It's a great event, check it out here: http://www.unicef.org.uk/socceraid2010/

Anyway, it's time to get going to Philly. Have a great weekend!

Jacqueline says, "Soccer Rocks!"

Howdy Do,

I was perusing the internet today and came across www.objectivo.com today. It's a pretty cool soccer exclusive website but my favorite part had to be the store. You should definitely check out the world cup tees and my favorite, the "California Flag soccer tee!"

On the home front, we entertained our Landlord and his family today. Their daughter Jacqueline baked us cookies and drew us an awesome picture! Thanks Jacqueline, soccer does rock and so do you!

Weekend update!

ooooh it's been a while since my last entry. Let's see, what do I need to fill you in on?

Last weekend we traveled to St. Louis to take on the Athletica. We had a little "incident" at training when Daphne Koster and Jessica Landstrom ran into each other and were both taken to the hospital for stitches. Unfortunately for us Daphne was unable to play in the game, but being Sky Blue FC, we resiliently pulled it together! Jessica Landstrom was fit to play and nearly scored in the second half but thank goodness for Laura Kalmari! She scored twice for us in the span of 5-8 minutes but sadly we conceded late in the game and ended up drawing with STL 2-2.

Today was an awesome day for soccer. Sure Inter Milan defeated Bayern Munich in the Champion's League final today but the big surprise was that it was shown on FOX! Can you believe it? Nice one America! Also, as you may or may not know the WPS had a league wide bye week this weekend because of the US international friendly against Germany. So my day was spent watching sporting events and thinking about kitten adoption, so Kiersten Dallstream and I decided to go to Petsmart on a whim. Lucky us!

Until next time,

Sky Blue FC custom tees

Ok people I'm asking for YOUR opinions. Hey! Don't look away! Help me out here.

I've illustrated the entire Sky Blue FC team and I'd really like to make a tee shirt, it'd be semi expensive to print due to the amount of colors but if demand is high enough it might just happen. I'm looking for a number. A number of people that would buy or seriously contemplate buying this tee shirt. Please feel free to leave comments in regard to what you feel would make this/these tees more desirable. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Lists, Random thoughts, and a quote of the day

Well hello!

Just thought I'd put together a quick scribble and a Monday recap for ya, so here it goes. Actually maybe I'll tweak the format for a change, how about bullet points, or a list? Lists are good.

• Saturday
- Sky Blue FC lost to FC Gold Pride 0 - 1. Boo!
+ saved a PK! Yay!
+ Proved we can defend 1 v 1 and 2 v 1. Yay!

• Sunday
+ Regeneration training session
- Lost my sunglasses. BOO!

• Monday
+ Day off
+ Found my sunglasses! Yay!
+ Drove to Philadelphia
- A rather large, and impatient woman in a car honked and yelled "Damn, take all day!" at me while I was walking in a cross walk and clearly had the right of way.
+ Did a live phone interview with Temryss Lane and Nick Webster of Fox Soccer Channel's "Fox Football Fone in" (more info to come soon) So cool!
+ Spontaneous photo shoot outside the first bank of the United States.
+ South Street stroll.
+ Realized that my friends are awesome. ( I think...)

Quote of the day: " Trenton makes, the world Takes"

So over all, today was a swell day. I hope your Monday was as good as mine.

Ndamukong Suh Sky Blue FC shout out!

Saturday, May 1, 2010

After a disappointing loss to FC Gold Pride three weekends ago we, at Sky Blue FC, knew we had a lot to work on in the week to come. As a reward for all our hard work that week Heather O’Reilly and I decided to treat ourselves to two brand new guitars and hopefully some lessons. Eager to improve, I headed out to NYC to meet up with HAO for what we like to call a “jam session,” which is actually way less cool then it sounds because I am actually awful at playing the guitar – hence, lessons. Speaking of which, I think HAO and I would gladly trade training/skill sessions for guitar lessons, just throwing it out there into cyberspace because you just never know, do you? Right, so after plucking our six strings for a few hours we decided to get some food at a sweaty, cramped, delicious Mexican restaurant called Tortilla Flats just round the corner from HAO’s and boy it was packed! We ended up eating outside because the inside of the restaurant was literally the size of a small prop plane but that didn’t keep us from enjoying ourselves, the hoards of drunk people piling in and out of surrounding restaurants, cabs and weird Partridge Family buses was especially entertaining.

Last Saturday finally arrived fashionably late and before we knew it we were headed to Chicago via Detroit. Sounds pretty boring right? Well, it was, except for one awesome incident at gate C17. We had heard through the grapevine that Ndamukong Suh, Detroit’s number one draft pick and the NFL’s #2 overall was in the terminal. Yael Averbuch and I built up the courage to pay him a visit and he ended up actually being really nice, and interested in who we were and what we did. How cool is that?! Anyway, we asked him if he would mind giving us a little shout out and he did. (Ndamukong, thanks for that we really appreciate it. Congratulations and good luck.) Anyway, we boarded our flight to Chicagoland, landed, went to training, then dinner, followed by the customary team meetings, then bed. Ugh.

The following day was game day and it ended up being a little more eventful then usual. We woke up, went down to breakfast and noticed one of our teammates Yael Averbuch wasn’t there. She had become rather violently ill late the night before and was taken to the hospital for fluids. Unfortunately she was confined to her bed for the rest of the night and was forced to watch our game via matchtracker, which I’m sure only made her nausea worse. While Ya Ya was being seen to, the rest of the team had a pre-game meal to eat, but when some of the girls came downstairs they had red, swollen, glassy eyes. We asked what happened and through their giggly sniffles they replied, “we were watching Marley and Me…”

About an hour after pre-game, we left for Toyota park and kicked off at 5pm against the Red Stars. It was absolutely freezing and blowing a gale but we started off strong regardless of the conditions. Unfortunately, disaster struck after about twenty minutes or so when Carli Lloyd broke her fibula. At the half, the conditions had significantly worsened. No longer did we have the luxury of with the wind at our backs but now we were faced up against a massive head wind and torrential, needle like rain for 20 minutes. It was a battle, but fortunately for us luck was on our side that night and we came away with a win.

Don’t forget to catch us today, Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 6pm EST at Yurcak field on the campus of Rutgers University as we, Sky Blue FC, take on Marta and FC Gold Pride. If you can’t make it out the game it will be televised on Fox Soccer Channel but I for one would definitely love to see you all in person!

Hey. Smile. There it is!

Welcome Sky Blue FC fans!

Well hello Sky Blue FC followers, how are you? I'm doing great, just in case you were wondering...First I'd like to express how happy and excited I am to be back here in New Jersey and playing for Sky Blue FC again. Three games in and already the season has been filled with "oohs and aaahs" and other various monosyllabic grunts and noises. Second, I suppose this blog will be a little introduction to what "The Bard, The Blog" actually entails. Long story short, I'll be documenting my experiences on and off the pitch this season which really encompasses anything and everything. So I hope you enjoy it and if you don't well, that's your problem...
